Lucas TAC Ignition system

Classic/Historic Lucas TAC Ignition System - Ignition module, matched coil and ballast resistor. This a very rare item and is ideally suited to vehicles which, for various reasons, need to retain a conventional ignition system but are seeking improvements in all round performance. The initials TAC stand for Transistor-Assisted Contacts and the system is designed to reduce the work done by the distributor contacts to a level giving maximum contact life and improvements in engine performance. A special high-voltage transistor in the TAC system makes and breaks the coil primary circuit. This means that the contacts carry only a small current and, consequently wear is substantially reduced. It is claimed that after bedding in of the fibre heel, no contact adjustment will be needed for 25,000 miles. Furthermore, the contact breaker capacitor is unnecessary. Due to the absence of arcing at the contacts, the performance at low engine speeds is improved and starting is easier particularly in low ambient temperatures. Because the transistor can handle a higher ignition coil primary current than contacts in a conventional system, a coil having a reduced primary inductance is employed. The system retains all the components of a conventional coil-and-distributor arrangement.

The Tecalemit Jackson fuel injection items have been Sold.

The block is a Ford L block with steel main caps and has S68 . 13 .330 stamped in the normal engine number position, the crank is a 5 main item with MARTIN forged on the crank and is also stamped LAYSTAL and the date April 68. The block is sleeved and has a bore of 85mm. The crank stroke is a close as damit is to swearing 57mm which is about 1295cc. The crank has standard main and +.010” big end journals. The rods are forged Holbay items and are + - 134mm centre to centre the rod to stroke ratio is therefore about 2.35 : 1. The pistons are 2 ring Cosworth F3/Junior items. The cam is marked A6 and is in good shape, there is also a second cam with longer duration – I guess about 320deg which is also as new, photo with the F I parts.

The head is a cast down draft port item with inverted retaining studs into the LHS water jacket for bolts #2 & #4 the intake ports have a light metal added and blended obviously to optimise shape and flow. The valves are stainless and have spring seats and retainers made from a high grade steel with shims under each seat, the stem to guide clearance is correct and there is no visible wear. There is one inner spring broken and there is a crack on the gasket face between the water coolant passages between cyl’s 2 & 3. The head has RWS  631  25 stamped on the machining control pads on the RHS. The Rocker shaft is a Holbay full ally pedestal unit and was not photographed as a colleague of mine is restoring it for me.

There is also a lot of Tecalemit Jackson fuel injection parts as can be seen in the photographs. The one fuel distribution unit has never been used and has the inspection tag from 1968 with the part.
